“Ellon Set Out Their Stall”.

By Jack Nixon

On a day when the Caley leagues were overshadowed by the happenings at Murrayfield, Ellon chose to make their case, if not for this season, but for next after thrashing Aberdeen Wanderers 94 - 0 at Groats Road.

Ellon are quietly making their way in Caley Division 1, easing into the top three but 19 points adrift of leaders Dunfermline and nine behind Orkney, and while they are highly unlikely to feature in the promotion race, have yet to play Orkney in Kirkwall, and who knows quite capable of undermining the islanders’ title push.

Aberdeenshire’s dream of winning Caley 2 North looks to be slim, given 2nd Highland’s demolition of their Aberdeen Grammar counterparts at Canal Park where I am told the visitors were totally outclassed in the 73 - 5 rout.

In Caley 3 North, 2nd Gordonians closed in on the title, taking their unbeaten run to 10 games after their 46 - 5 win away to Stornaway, while in the same division Shetland beat Kinloss Eagles 26 - 7 in Lerwick.

Away from the leagues, Shire’s Charlie Catto launched the Grampian Barbarians with a flourish at Woodside, serving as a exotic aperitif before the champagne served up at Murrayfield.
